enhancements/changes in FreeBSD 5.3 Networking Stack
Very interesting, mainly because I’m actually understanding this stuff. 6 months ago to a year ago I would have recognized the word ‘TCP’ and not much more. All the enhancments apply to any OS that is doing routing, including Cisco. I wonder how OpenBSD rates up with Linux and FreeBSD 5.3. I guess we’ll find out.
The TCP timing hacks seem very cool. We should test out large HTTP and FTP transactions through the new filters to see how well we handle them. Sounds like the point of these hacks is to speed up or smooth out a connection to a host on a worse network. So the filters could actually improve some kinds of transactions.
